Platts & Nisbett pride itself on the competence of our craftsmen. Each craftsman serves an apprenticeship of 5 years before becoming fully qualified.
Here are just a few of our staff who have served and who are serving apprenticeships
Name: Mick Canetti
Age: 59
Job Description: General Foreman
Start Date: 01/09/1977
Upon leaving school at the age of 15 years Mick began a 5 year apprenticeship as a fitter with Joseph Gray (Surgical Instrument manufacturers) Boston Street Sheffield as an apprentice fitter. In 1975 the company was sold and he began employment with Downs Surgical – Sheffield. During his time at Joseph Gray Mick worked along side Robert (Bob) Nisbett & Ken Platts. In 1977 both Ken Platts & Robert Nisbett founded Platts & Nisbett Ltd Surgical Instrument manufacturers – Leigh Street Sheffield.
Mick left Downs and joined the company as a qualified fitter and later was promoted to General Foreman. He is to this date the longest serving member of staff. During his employment Mick has trained many apprentices such as Richard Badger and still trains to this date.
Name: Richard Badger
Age: 42
Job Description: Production Foreman
Start Date: 01/06/1984
Richard left school at the age of 16 years and began employment with Platts & Nisbett as an apprentice fitter in 1984.
During his apprenticeship Richard´s mentors were Robert Nisbett & Mick Canetti. After 5 years Richard became a qualified fitter and was later promoted to purchasing, research & development foreman during March 2005 followed by a further promotion to Production Foreman in May 2010.
Richard´s duties include mentoring apprentices such as Matthew Brunyee, development of new products and managing workshop staff.
Name: Matthew Brunyee
Age: 22
Job Description: Apprentice Fitter
Start Date: 17/9/2008
Matthew joined Platts & Nisbett in 2008, having previously worked as a carpet fitter. He is currently training as an apprentice fitter and is being mentored by Richard Badger & Wayne Baldwin (General Manager). After completion of training Matthew will qualify as a fitter in 2013.
Name: Chris West
Age: 29
Job Description: Machinist
Start Date: 01/10/1998
Upon leaving school at the age of 16, Chris began employment as an apprentice machinist in October of 1998.
Chris's day to day duties include processing the first stages of manufacture. Sizing and machining joints, racking and teeth to the correct specifications. He also machines the instrument joints, know as leafing & slotting.
Chris trained for a period of 5 years before becoming a fully qualified machinist. He currently manages the machine shop and has over the last 8 years trained several machinists' taking them through their apprentiship's to becoming fully qualified.
